New Research Links Longer Daytime Napping to Increased Risk of Atrial Fibrillation

Conducted by researchers in Spain, the study identifies a significant association between the duration of afternoon siestas and the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF), suggesting that when it comes to midday rest, the threshold between a healthy habit and a potential health risk may be as short as thirty minutes.
Atrial fibrillation is a common cardiac arrhythmia characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rate, which can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. The researchers tracked 20,348 participants, all of whom were free of atrial fibrillation at the baseline of the study. With an average age of 38 at the start of the observation period, the group was demographically diverse, consisting of 61% women.

After excluding participants who did not nap, the data indicated that individuals napping for 15 to 30 minutes experienced the greatest risk reduction. Specifically, those who napped for less than 15 minutes showed a 42% lower risk of developing AF (HR 0.58) compared to those who napped for longer than 30 minutes. Those who napped between 15 and 30 minutes fared even better, showing a 56% reduced risk.

Conversely, the study proposes that a short, controlled nap acts as a restorative mechanism rather than a disruptive one. Short bursts of rest, kept strictly under the 30-minute mark, may help in stabilizing the circadian rhythm, lowering blood pressure, and reducing systemic stress—all of which are critical factors in maintaining cardiovascular health and preventing the onset of arrhythmias like AF.
